The History Behind the Hunting Journal

The History Behind the Hunting Journal

By Andrew Aughenbaugh, 1 min reading time

Back in the year of 1990, my hunting changed forever. I began keeping notes, including sketches during my deer hunting scouting trips. I drew sketches of the possible tree stand locations and noted if I thought it was a better morning or evening spot, and the best wind direction to hunt the location.  Since that time, I have journaled almost every day, meaning I have about 36 years of notes of what I did each day of my life. But more importantly, I have been able to translate those notes into real world success. When returning to a spot I haven’t hunted in a while or when planning a hunt, I refer back to my notes jogging my memory and can begin the hunt based on information collected over the years.

Case in point, I am currently preparing for a Colorado Mule Deer hunt in November and this will be my third time hunting the area. Instead of using my memory of the past hunts, I can refer to my journals and pick up right where I left off.

We started our activity specific journals two years ago based on a shared idea between my son and I: provide the perfect activity based high-quality journal to capture memories through the written hand on actual paper. What partly started because of my keeping hunting notes in my daily journals has now come full circle as we have just released our newest line of activity based journals - a hunting journal providing the perfect opportunity to capture the hunting experience, reflect on the hunt, and prepare to repeat the next hunting adventure.

Happy hunting.
